My latest television addiction is Married at First Sight. The aspect of the arranged marriages is merely a gimmick to me : remove it and I’m still going to watch the show. It does leave one wondering however is one or more of these couples are under a placebo effect and were not matched based on compatibility but rather the opposite. I guess when you do both you attract all types of audience members including both those who want to see the couples succeed and those who are here to eat popcorn and listen to the hot goss. Or both in one person, like me.
I started in the most recent seasons – Nashville and Denver. Finally having figured out how to watch it via Disney + via Hulu I went back to the first season and started over. You gotta find out the LORE of each show, you gotta know it all so you can expose yourself to all of the fandom without fear of spoilers. That is unless of course you like spoiling the seasons so you can gauge the signs and symptoms of the impending end of a marriage.
I can’t believe they ever had a show format where the couples are entirely separated the entire season. I can’t wait to see which season is the first season they combine the couples, do they do it in stages? The first season’s reunion was so tame with the cross criticism from one couple to another – it’s mind blowing to watch early seasons without the interactions and support from the other couples. Not only do they talk onscreen but they’re obviously communicating via text and phone off camera.
But this show proves that I basically will watch any socially sanctioned audio visual recordings of intimacy adjacent human interactions and maybe that’s something about myself that I need to examine. Or something to enjoy and make a career off of.
